Katharine Hope McPhee is a pop and R&B singer, model and actress who was the runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006.
Born in Los Angeles, California, McPhee moved with her parents and sister to the Sherman Oaks neighborhood at age 12. McPhee has been singing since the age of two. She is of Irish, Scottish, and German ancestry.
Katharine is also an accomplished actress for her young age, having starred as the lead in local productions of Annie Get Your Gun and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - where she met her husband, Nick Cokas.
Among other accolades, McPhee was nominated in 2005 for the Theatre L.A. Ovation Award for her lead role in Annie Get Your Gun.
McPhee was persuaded by Nick Cokas and her parents to try out for American Idol in San Francisco. Her audition went well and she made it all the way to the finals (even past Chris Daughtry) before losing to Taylor Hicks.
Her self-titled debut album, Katharine McPhee, sold 116,000 copies in its first week, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. The first single from the album was the Top 30 hit, "Over It."
As of January 2008, however, Katharine McPhee has parted ways with RCA Records, and has "moved on to support her other entertainment activities."
